Spray Dampening System, TSD-2000S
An affiliate company of TKS, Tohki Electronics Co., Ltd., has recently developed a new spray dampening system for rotary offset newspaper printing presses called, TSD-2000S.
The TSD-2000S first applies pressure to the dampening water after which it is converted to a fine mist at the spray nozzle and then sprayed on to the chrome roller. Its components consist of the spray bar, dampening water supply device, water softener, control panel and an operation panel using a graphic panel. By automatically analyzing the necessary volume of dampening water for optimal printing and producing minute water particles with its small capacity spray nozzle and increasing the spray frequency, a uniform film of water for stable printing quality is realized.
There are two types of spray dampening systems, the TSD-1000 and the TSD-2000. Development of the TSD2000S was carried out with the primary aim of lengthening the maintenance cycle and reducing the maintenance operation time, while keeping the functions of the TSD2000.
The nozzle utilized in this TSD-2000S can be snapped on to the spray bar by a one-touch operation. By integrating the nozzle into a “one-size larger” cap, it has become possible to put it onto the spray bar in a capped condition so that replacements of nozzles, taking out or snapping in the nozzles for cleaning and other maintenance work can be done by one-touch operation. In keeping with this lightweight feature the drain pan material has been changed from stainless steel to lightweight plastic. Previously, the drain pan itself was lifted to an angle and drained when installing the spray bar, but now, by providing a grooved incline at the bottom part of the pan, an integrated drain pipe is realized making way for a smooth flow of draining water and reducing the possibility of plug-ups due to paper and ink buildup. This has resulted in drastically lengthening the maintenance cycle and also drastically shortening the time it takes to do the actual maintenance work.
Main Features of the TSD-2000S
* The water curves can be set for each cylinder from among the 16 types of pre-set water curves. Furthermore, it is possible to supply water in varying volumes according to the increase or decrease in printing speed, thus eliminating situations of not enough or too much water.
* On the pre-set water curves, the water spray volume for each spray nozzle can be finely adjusted.
* Control/adjustment in the supply of dampening water can be done automatically after receiving page imposition information from the T-NPC, thus facilitating preparation work.
* As the dampening water is non-circulating, there is no worry of the nozzles clogging up making for easy maintenance.
* With the nozzle distance adjustment system, the spacing between the nozzle and the chrome roller can be adjusted.
Web Surface Inspecting System, INSPECTOR-300R

Our affiliate company, Tohki Electronics Co., Ltd., has developed this web surface inspecting system, the INSPECTOR-300R, for automation and manpower savings in the newspaper offset printing environment.
The INSPECTOR-300R automatically detects any faulty copies during the printing process and sends an eject or discharge signal to the printing press ejection device whereby bad copies are systematically discharged assuring constant quality printed products.
This system was developed by improving on the previous INSPECTOR-300 in such areas as ramping up the inspection processing speed and increasing memory resulting in high speed web surface inspection. Furthermore, with the modification of the image processing program for inspecting the web surface, even abnormalities of very small images can be detected.
For the alarm display, by taking in the actual web surface image and displaying the ejection area of the web surface image on the operator console screen, it has become easier to confirm the fault areas of the web surface.
The INSPECTOR-300R functions by emitting light from the light emitting diode situated on the sensor bar attached to the guide roller at the end of the printing press unit and the resulting reflective luminosity is then read by the photo diode camera. When the press is running at low speed at startup, the sensor starts inspecting, and when the operator determines that the copies are good, the surface data are then set as standard data after which, by comparing the printed surface density, any change in density or dirtying of the paper surface are detected. Depending on the degree of abnormality, either a warning signal or an ejection signal is output, which is displayed on the console screen and a blinking light is shown. Furthermore, by online connection with the T-NPC, different types of settings can be set from the T-NPC for automatic operation.
The main feature of this system lies in the fact that because a special LED (light emitting diode) is used, detection capability has been dramatically heightened for hard-to-detect color surfaces such as yellow and blue areas. With the 64 photo diode cameras used for the sensor, the detection perimeter has become more precise allowing for more detailed detection. As the CPU, and the power supply, which was previously installed in the control panel, are incorporated in the sensor bar there is no need for a control panel thus reducing the actual installation/assembly work.
