Public Showing of Shaftless Web Offset Press, the Color Top 9000CDH at drupa2004

TKS developed the first domestic shaftless web offset press, the Color Top 9000CDH, which utilizes 6-page across by 2-page around plate and blanket cylinders. This printing press was exhibited at drupa2004, the biggest international print show in the world, from May 6, 2004 to May 19, 2004 in Dusseldorf, Germany where the press actually ran and printed at a maximum speed of 90,000 cph, three times a day for every day of the exhibit--sometimes running five times in one day to accommodate special guests. The Color Top 9000CDH ran at the show inline with the TKS Counter Stacker, CS-500 and always ran at a top speed of 90,000 cph without any stops or mishaps, and sample prints were handed out to the many, many spectators as the products came off the press. The visitors were struck by the quietness and the smooth and stable running of the ultra high speed press. Many commented on the superb technology of TKS.

In recent years newspapers and printing houses in Europe have been reassessing the advantages of large or jumbo sized presses and are starting to take a good look at 6 X 2 web presses. To answer to this need, TKS initiated development of the Color Top 9000CDH, an H-type tower web offset press aimed mainly for the U.S. and European markets. After going through testing at our Haneda Factory and through thorough checkouts of all the sections, the first press was exhibited at drupa2004.

In contrast to the conventional double wide, 4-page wide by 2-page around press, the Color Top 9000CDH is a triple wide press which is wider in length--6-page wide by 2-page around. If both types of presses were running at the same speed, the triple wide would be able to print 1.5 times more pages than the double wide, and if the folder unit were to be changed to collect mode, then one unit will be able to print 24 pages rather the 16 pages on a double wide press. When printing the same number of pages, the 6 X 2 would require less units, thus, with fewer units, the footprint will be reduced allowing for savings in building space and reducing initial cost. In looking at the running costs, we can think of a variety of benefits such as less paper waste due to fewer pasters and shorter web paths, less paper roll paster preparations, less time in web leading, reduction in power consumption, and less maintenance costs. With a maximum speed of 90,000 copies per hour, this web offset press will provide a much higher level of productiveness for the user.
